The preparation of parents for the baptism of their child may vary according to the situation: it will be different according to whether it is a first child or the fourth one...The priest who is in contact with them will decide how to proceed

" Baptism not only purifies from all sins, but also makes the neophyte ' a new creature,' an adopted son of God, who has become a ' partaker of the divine nature,' member of Christ and co-heir with him, and a temple of the Holy Spirit."

( Catechism of the Catholic Church: para. 1265)

THE EUCHARIST

pain et vin

"The Eucharist is "the source and summit of the Christian life." The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch."

(Catechism of the Catholic Church, para. 1324)

Children are prepared for their first communion, within the framework of the chaplaincy of the Lycée and  those of Clapham, Ealing and Jacques  Prévert.  A teaching is also offered to the children who do not attend French schools.

The Sunday School of Notre Dame de France also prepares children for the first communion.

Newly baptised adults, who have received the sacrament of confirmation, can also receive communion . The preparation for baptism and confirmation for adults takes place also at Notre Dame de France.

THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY

"The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament."

(Catechism of the Catholic Church, para. 1601)

If you wish to get married at Notre Dame de France or overseas and one of the future spouses is francophone.

Contact Father Christian Andraud as soon as possible.

Phone:  020 7440 2649

In your e-mail, mention:
- names and surnames
- dates of birth
- addresses
- phone numbers
- religions
- language in which you would prefer your preparation to marriage to take place.

and then, if you so wish, introduce yourself briefly.

If you have been baptised in the Catholic Church, you will have to produce, at your very first meeting:

- names and surnames of parents
- dates of birth
- names and addresses of parishes where you have been baptised

You could, beforehand, ask full copies of birth certificate for both of you from your birth-place Town Halls.

The preparation will be, in principle, 2 or 3 meetings of about an hour each with a priest as well as a group meeting on a Saturday between 09h30 and 16h30.

The meeting will regroup a dozen of couples in preparation and two accompanying couples trained for this purpose. A normal preparation would need at least six months, but it would even be better if it could be ten or more.

THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE AND RECONCILIATION

père et fils

Here is an enlightening and encouraging text written by Cardinal Martini, archbishop of Milan, on this sacrament of reconciliation which he believes can be a form of prayer and a source of healing :

THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK

The Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament only for those who are at the point of death. It may indeed be a source of comfort for any one who is ill and wishes to be supported in this way by the prayers of a minister who acts in the name of the whole church community.

The celebration of the sacrament includes the following principal elements: the priest- in silence - lays hands on the sick; he prays over them in the faith of the Church and then he anoints them with olive oil ( or any appropriate vegetable oil ) blessed, if possible, by the bishop.

While the priest anoints the forehead of the sick person he says: "Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit." Then the priest anoints the sick person’s hands while saying: "May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up."

If you wish to receive the sacrament or if you know of a member of your family or of your acquaintances who so wish, contact the presbytery.

A priest will come round.

"By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. And indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the People of God by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ."

( Catechism of the Catholic Church: para.1499)
